Job Description

The Cutting and Forming lead directs and coordinates the activities of the Cutting and Forming Department employees and is responsible for quality control and production of the department so that high quality products are produced with a low rejection rate.
This position ensures that employees are productive, that standard operating and safety procedures are followed, and that products meet specifications and quality standards.
This is a hands-on leadership position that includes working with the team as needed to meet daily goals in addition to daily leadership duties.
Cutting and Forming department includes Laser, Brake, and Shear Operators. Monitor the department s performance for ways to improve quality and performance.
The Lead must have a comprehensive understanding of the entire production flow from start to finish, recognizing how decisions at the Laser, Shear, and Press Brake stages affect downstream operations and overall productivity.
They will strategically prioritize and sequence tasks, ensuring the shop maintains a balanced and level workflow to optimize efficiency and prevent bottlenecks across departments. This is a hands-on leadership role requiring close collaboration with team members and other department leads to meet daily and long-term goals.

Job Requirements

Departments Daily Operational Management:
1. Analyze nesting schedules and schedule specification dates to determine the laser production schedule work requirements each day, sequence of laser assignments, materials needed, equipment, and personnel needed to allocate resources effectively.
2. Plan and assign work for Laser, Shear, and Press Brake operators, ensuring on-time production and efficient workflow.
3. Monitor the work of employees in Laser, Brake, and Shear departments to ensure that tasks are performed in a safe and timely manner, in accordance with all specifications detailed on cut sheets, with completeness, accuracy, and utilizing proper techniques for safe and secure manufacturing.
4. Coordinate department activities with other departments to ensure production for each job is on schedule and in the proper location.
5. Keep the VP of Operations apprised of the status of projects in the department and of any obstacles to on-time completion of projects.
6. Evaluate workflow across Laser, Brake, and Shear departments and recommend efficiency improvements.
7. Establish and implement procedures that maintain high standards of operations, comply with OSHA safety standards, and result in shipments that conform to specifications and quality standards.
8. Ensure that each department is clean, organized and free of dangerous conditions with hazardous materials properly stored.
9. Inspect equipment and tools for damage or wear, work with Director of Engineering on preventive maintenance needs.
10. Notify VP of Operations of any problems regarding machine or equipment operations.
Quality Control and Reporting:
11. Conduct quality inspections at key production stages to ensure compliance with specifications and standards.
12. Maintain department records, including production logs, scrap reports, and material usage.
13. Communicate any quality issues or concerns to the VP of Operations promptly.
Employee Training and Development
14. Ensure employees receive the initial and ongoing training necessary to perform their jobs safely and effectively. Implement structured training programs for new hires and ongoing development for existing staff.
15. Ensure each new hire completes the required training in their first 30/60/90 days and is documented through the HR system and/or through performance forms.
16. Train and mentor an alternate employee(s) to take on leadership responsibilities in the department lead's absence.
17. Document employee progress and provide constructive feedback to support their professional development while adhering to company standards, procedures, and policies.
18. Identify and document skill gaps and provide opportunities for employees to enhance their capabilities through cross-training, mentorship, and skill-building opportunities.
19. Foster a cooperative and harmonious work environment conducive to maintaining high employee morale, productivity, safety, accuracy, efficiency, while also promoting teamwork.
Performance Management and Employee Relations:
20. Conduct and document regular performance evaluations to assess employee productivity, quality of work, and adherence to company standards.
21. Provide and document ongoing coaching and feedback to help employees improve their performance and reach their full potential.
22. Collaborate with management to resolve employee grievances and maintain a positive work environment.
23. Oversee employee work hours, track tardies/absenteeism review and approve weekly timesheets, and approve or deny PTO requests.
Competencies:
1. Strong ability to prioritize and assign tasks to coordinate the work and activities of others.
2. Thorough understanding of the entire production process and its interdependencies, from initial laser cutting through final product completion.
3. Ability to analyze production needs and determine the optimal sequence for cutting and forming to maintain a steady and efficient workflow across the shop.
4. Must be able to establish a good rapport with the workforce and communicate effectively with management.
5. Ability to set up, maintain and supervise the safe operation of equipment.
6. Comprehensive knowledge of Laser, Shear, and Press Brake operations and processes.
7. Knowledge of shop work procedures and safety policies.
8. Ability to motivate others and create a team-oriented atmosphere.
9. Must display safety conscious behavior.
10. Ability to read and understand shop cut sheets.
11. Competent at basic dimensional measuring and use of measurement tools.
12. Competency in basic shop math.
13. Strong orientation toward thoroughness, accuracy and urgency.
14. Ability to work in a stressful, fast-paced environment.
Education and Experience Requirements:
1. High school diploma or GED required.
2. Associates or Bachelor's degree in logistics, supply chain management, or related field preferred.
3. Minimum 2-3 years demonstrated leadership experience
4. Minimum 1-3 years experience in construction, manufacturing, hollow metal industry or fabrication environment preferred.
5. Experience in Amada CNC Laser, Amada Brake Presses, and Shear Machines.
Physical Requirements:
1. Lift, carry, push or pull up to 65 lbs. Frequently.
2. Squat/kneel, bend/stoop, twist/turn, grasp and reach outward frequently.
3. Sit, stand and walk for up to 10 hours per day.
4. Ability to work in a 40 -100 F work environment.
5. Ability to work in a fast-paced industrial environment wearing vision protection, steel-toed shoes and other appropriate protective clothing.
